FIRE (Home Catechism)
“The Church of the home remains the one place where children and young people can receive an authentic catechesis. There cannot be too great an effort on the part of the Christian parents to prepare for this ministry of being their own children’s catechist.”
-- Pope John Paul II

FIRE, which stands for Family Inter-generational Religious Education is basically home catechism. A group of parents from CDM meet in one home every week to share our faith with our children. The formal “catechism class” lasts about an hour and there are currently 4 families and 8 children in FIRE. However, we are not detached from the parish since our children still participate in the Sacraments of the Church at the appropriate age.
Home catechism encourages interaction and bonding between parents and their children. The lesson preparation is done as a group where parents acquire a better understanding of the faith and experience deeper spiritual growth. When we have activities we also involve our older children and this becomes a mini community event and a wonderful learning experience for everyone!
